Farmers in Southern Ukraine are hoping for more rain. Traders report new prices for sunflower seeds in Bulgaria. Kazakhstan is expecting a record production of 1.7 million mt.

Hoping for more rain

According to APK Inform, the prices for Ukrainian sunflower seeds have reached a two-month high. Processing companies are still actively buying sunflower seeds and have raised their purchasing bids to UAH 26,600-27,500/mt CPT, which corresponds to USD 641-663/mt (EUR 550-569/mt). While continuous rain is improving prospects in the western and central parts of the country, farmers are still hoping for rain in Southern and Eastern Ukraine, where the yield potential is already reduced. As the plants are underdeveloped in many fields in the south, some farmers are making the decision to get rid of these sunflowers and prepare the fields for winter sowing instead. Additional news is that Ukraine and Egypt intend to improve cooperation, aiming to ship more grains and sunflower oil to Egypt.

Fixed prices in Bulgaria

Bulgarian sunflower seeds are trading in a firm range in Bulgaria. The quotations for bakery kernels from last year's crop still range at EUR 1,060/mt (USD 1,235/mt) DDP Germany and for this year's crop at EUR 905-1,100/mt (USD 1,054-1,281/mt) FCA Bulgaria.

Record 1.7 million mt in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is reckoning with a record crop of 1.7 million mt on 1.14 million ha in 2025, as Andrey Antonov, Executive Director for Strategic Development at the National Oilseed Processors Association of Kazakhstan (NOPA), stated during the Astyk 2025 agri conference on 31 July in the Kostanay region. Thereby, the country will nearly catch up with Turkey, where production is forecast at 1.8 million mt, and will become the sixth-largest sunflower seed-producing country in the world. NOPA estimates Kazakhstan's current oilseed processing capacity at 4.98 million mt, with 4 million mt for sunflower seeds. The intention is to enlarge the processing capacities for oilseeds by an additional 1.63 million mt and for sunflower seeds by 1.47 million mt in the next three years.
